Why this story matters:

The poster is meant to advertise a family travel card. The councillor posted the following comment on Facebook:

That is not normal! Two faggots with a baby and one of them is a negro. I am disgusted."

Such statements are not uncommon for Freedom Party members. FMpolitics, a right-wing Facebook page that has been banned multiple times, also called for boycotting the Austrian Railways.

Opposition spokesman Mario Lindner (SPÖ) demanded consequences:

"This is a homophobic and racist statement that uses disgusting language."

Opposition parties requested Webers' resignation, but there were already many such requests in the wake of other scandals.

Details from the story:

  • Weber received only a "sharp reprimand" for his behavior, meaning that he was spoken to by members of his own party.
  • He has since apologized for his choice of words. "As a conservative person and family man, the image of the traditional family matters to me," he wrote on Facebook.
  • He now wants to donate 1,500 euros to the association "Licht für Kinder", which helps sick and disadvantaged children.
