Artist transforms conservative online content into feminist manifesto

Croatian composer Sara Glojnarić won this year's international music award "Kranichsteiner Musicpreis" for a #popfem video installation which transforms YouTube materials promoting backward thinking into a feminist declaration.

Why this story matters:

The idea is simple yet brilliant -- to deconstruct conservative propaganda and re-construct it into a women's rights oriented standpoint.

It uses the same mechanism as the original videos: taking information about women's rights out of context, or more precisely -- ripping it out of context -- and turns it to women's advantage.

It's not exactly a music piece, but such a witty manipulation of right-wingers is music to my ears.

Details from the story:

  • Croatian music composer Sara Glojnarić and German video artist Binha Haaase created a video installation #popfem that transforms YouTube videos showing ultra-conservative, right-wing ideas into their opposite.
  • The creative duo used video materials presenting anti-feminist views found on YouTube, which they turned into a recital that support pro-choice feminist approach to women issues such as abortion.
  • Glojnarić presented #popfem at this year's contemporary music program in Darmstadt, Germany.
