Journalist raped and murdered in Bulgaria

Viktoria Marinova, a Bulgarian television journalist who had recently recorded a show about fraud allegations against high-ranking officials and businessmen in the country was raped and murdered last week.

Why this story matters:

The body of Viktoria Marinova, 30, a journalist and host of the investigative news program "Detector" was found in a park in the Bulgarian city of Ruse on October 6.

Officials, including the Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, have promised a thorough investigation. The OSCE has condemned the murder and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Marinova is the third journalist to be murdered in the European Union this year and the country is ranked 111 out of 180 countries  in the Reporters with Borders press freedom index, the lowest of any EU member.
