Rainbow Families awarded for LGBTIQ activism

The LGBTIQ activists of the Rainbow Families Association found themselves targeted by right-wing protesters throughout 2018, but their perserverance did not go unnoticed.

Why this story matters:

Throughout 2018, NewsMavens has reported about the challenges encountered by the Rainbow Families Association in its fight against homophobia in Croatia.

A year ago, the association published a picture book about same-sex parents that was burnt by protesters because it was a "representation of evil"

But it didn't scare the activists of the association. They continued promoting equality and requiring that their rights be respected

Even if the new Foster Care Act failed to include same-sex couples as potential foster parents, the visibility of same-sex families in Croatian public was significantly raised, leading to public debates about their needs and rights -- which makes the award they received from the Zbeletron NGO for LGBTIQ activism only too well-deserved.

Details from the story:

  • "Dugine obitelji" ("Rainbow Families") Association has published a picture book (My Rainbow Family) intended for pre-school age children in January 2018. The main purpose of the book was to allow children with same-sex parents to read about families like their own.
  • The poster featuring the picture book was burnt by protesters during the children carnival on the Croatian coast in February 2018. The incident happened during a traditional ceremony meant to burn "the evil of the previous year".
  • During 2018, Croatia has seen protests against the ratification of the Istanbul Convention due to its supposed hidden agenda to legalize gay marriage and promote homosexuality in schools.
  • In October 2018, the 'Rainbow Families' Association  organized an exhibition (Sva naša vjenčanja/All Our Weddings) showcasing wedding photos of Croatian same-sex couples taken since "life partnerships" were legalized in Croatia in 2014.
  • The new Foster Care Act, adopted in December 2018, still doesn't allow Croatian same-sex couples to be considered as foster parents.
  • The other two Zbeletron 'Lez of the Year' prizes for 2018 were awarded to lawyer Zrinka Bojanić and the 'Fierce Women' campaign.
