Why this story matters:

The murder took place on New Year’s Eve, on Corfu Island, after a fight between the young woman and her father, who disapproved of her relationship with a 30-year-old Afghan.

She was not close to any of her relatives, and lived away from her father because of his violent behavior. Her mother had been living in Albania for the last 15 years and the young woman lived alone. A few months ago, she had asked the Greek police to intervene because of her father's behavior.

The woman was employed at a local cafeteria, but last Wednesday she did not go to work. Her boyfriend was alarmed and reported her disappearance to the police. After a preliminary investigation, the police searched her father's house.

The day before, the woman had visited her father to wish him a happy new year. During an argument, the man hit her several times with a sharp-edged object and killed her. Afterwards, he buried her in the garden, and got rid of the evidence. When the police contacted him, he pretended not to know where his daughter was, and even begged them to help him find his child.

It took seven hours of interrogation until he broke and confessed to his crime, leading the police to the place where he had buried the body of his daughter. The 52-year-old was arrested and detained, and after his confession, he was charged with homicide.

One more woman has lost her life at the hands of a man. This time because she did not comply to her father’s demands to end her relationship. The father could not tolerate his daughter’s defiance and murdered her.

Patriarchy literally kills.

Details from the story:

  • According to the coroner, the 29-year-old fought for her life and suffered at the hands of her murderer.
  • The body of the 29-year-old woman is still unclaimed, as none of the relatives have claimed it.
  • The perpetrator's lawyer has requested psychiatric care for his client, arguing that the crime occurred while the man was having a psychotic episode.
