Why this story matters:

Recent data from the NGO Rozkoš Bez Rizika (Bliss without Risk) reveals that a majority of the women involved in prostitution in Czechia are single mothers. Their average age is 30, and 82 percent of them are Czech.

“Most of these women don’t admit they take money for sex. Sex work comes with a stigma and very many prejudices, so in most cases women don’t report rape, sexual violence,  extortion or being coerced into risky sexual practices”, says Barbora Pšenicová, project manager of the Rozkoš Bez Rizika organization.

This NGO tries to change stereotypes about sex workers in Czech society and help them win respect for their way of life, so they shouldn’t be afraid to leave their anonymity and start reporting criminal acts against them.

“Clients are very often convinced that the women wouldn’t report on them, so they feel free to commit the crime”, says Pšenicová.

Details from the story:

  • The long-term aim of the organization Rozkoš Bez Rizika is the decriminalization of prostitution. They believe that it would be much easier to spread information and educate against sexually transmitted diseases and that sexual crimes would also decrease, claims Pšenicová.
  • An hour of sex on the streets costs 500 Czech crowns, in private apartments around 1,000, in clubs 3,000 crowns, but almost half of the money goes to so called “managers”. That’s the reason why women agree to have sex without protection for 500 crowns more.
  • Many women choose prostitution after finding themselves in hard life circumstances, such as taking care of small children alone, having debts, not able to find good jobs or being afraid to lose a place to live. A typical Czech prostitute is a woman around 30, divorced with two kids, living in a small city. Very often women have an “ordinary” jobs, but don’t have enough money from it to make ends meet.
  • More than half of the prostitutes are single mothers, and 13 percent of them have three or more children. The positive thing is that there are now fewer drug addicts among sex workers.
  • In 2008, 60% of the country's prostitutes were Czech, the rest came from other countries, namely from the former Eastern bloc. But in 2018, activists from “Rozkoš bez rizika” noted that the trend was reversing and that 82% of of the sex worker population were Czech women.
