Why this story matters:

Influential fashion company Kering has announced a new policy that will mean it no longer uses models under the age of 18.

Chief executive François Henri-Pinault released a statement alongside the policy saying "We believe that we have a responsibility to put forward the best possible practices in the luxury sector, and we hope to create a movement that will encourage others to follow suit".

It is hoped this will have a positive influence on younger generations and will also be more appropriate for the “physiological and psychological maturity” that is necessary for the modelling profession.

Further, it hopes to deter models from striving to maintain an “adolescent physique” which some believe is a motivation behind extreme weight loss.

Details from the story:

  • Kering owns numerous influential fashion houses including Gucci, Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen.
  • The new policies will be implemented before the release of the 2020/2021 Autumn/winter collections.
