Why this story matters:

In a world first, Sweden has created a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PAM) which provides an ambulance that is exclusively dedicated to mental health care. The service is designed to combat the large numbers of suicide attempts in Sweden.

Trained mental health professionals will run the service, including two mental health nurses along with a paramedic. PAM hopes to improve the service and care provided to those suffering from mental illness and simultaneously reduce stigma.

PAM has been requested on an average of 4.3 times per day during its first year.

Fredrik Bengtsson, the head of mental health Emergency at Sabbatsberg Hospital considers the scheme “a huge success by police, nurses, healthcare officials, as well as by the patients.”

Details from the story:

  • Sweden reports more than 15,000 suicide attempts per year and 1,500 suicides.
  • Previously mental health cases were handled by police.
  • The service is currently available in Stockholm.
