Why this story matters:

The woman was visibly pregnant and the incident sparked strong reactions on social media.

In this recent incident, the guards have been accused of racial profiling and the use of disproportionate force, pushing her face-down and stomach-first onto a bench, as seen in camera footage.

One witness told a Swedish newspaper that other passengers told the guards to leave the woman alone.

The train incident comes shortly after a Swedish TV investigation (Kalla Fakta, TV4) into racial profiling in Sweden, in which hundreds of people with foreign backgrounds reported being stopped and checked by police for no obvious reason, including a woman who said she was asked if she was a sex worker when given a lift home by a friend.

Details from the story:

  • The woman was pregnant and travelling with a 5-year-old
  • She fell and was taken to hospital after being forcibly removed from an underground train, but both she and the baby were reportedly unhurt
  • A spokesperson for Stockholm's public transport company said it was "difficult to make reasonable judgments", but did say the incident was not handled correctly
  • The guards have been suspended pending an internal investigation
