Why this story matters:

Macedonians have been struggling with enormously high air pollution for years now.

Year after year, citizens complain and protest and public health institutions publish warnings about the dangers of the pollution.

But even though the institutions recognize the fact that the dirty air can be fatal for the health of its citizens, little has been done to address the causes of the pollution.

Details from the story:

  • Air pollution levels in Tetovo are among the highest in Europe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Besides Tetovo, air pollution in Macedonian capital of of Skopje and towns of Bitola, Kicevo, Kumanovo and Kavadarci has reached record highs during winter months of the last couple of years.
  • The major part of the pollution comes from coal-powered industry, household heating and cars.
  • Air pollution takes up to 1,200 lives in the country, according to estimates of Macedonian Public Health Institute.
