Why this story matters:

Slovaks are trying to decide who is the greatest Slovak of all times, but the poll has been controversial -- especially for its lack of women. Just a tenth of the nominees are female and only one woman made it to top ten -- the popular singer Marika Gombitová.

Regrettably, Gombitová asked the public television RTVS to remove her from the list because she does not think she deserves to be there.

This situation is so unusual that RTVS consulted the BBC, the network that designed the original series.

If they allow her to step down, another man will take her place and there will be no women in the top ten.

It is fitting that the name of the show is "Najväčší Slovák" -- literally, in Slovak the name means "The Greatest Slovak Man".

Details from the story:

  • The Greatest Slovak has also aroused other controversies. One of the nominees was supposed to be Jozef Tiso -- the president of the Slovak Republic during WW2, who was executed for war crimes and crimes against humanity and who is a popular figure among neo-nazis. He was removed after the pressure from the operators who refused to cast the SMS votes until he was eradicated from the shortlist.
  • In the top ten, there are also two Greeks -- Saints Cyril and Methodius -- they were missionaries and evangelized the people living in the area of today's Slovakia in the 7th Century. Some people are asking if Greeks could be the Greatest Slovaks, although some welcome them in the poll as a gesture of tolerance towards migrants.
  • The show was very critical of former politicians among the nominees but very tolerant to politicians who are currently the members of the ruling coalition.
  • And there is also one more controversial public figure on the list: Jánošík -- the Slovak bandit -- a very similar historical figure to Robin Hood in Britain. Some people argue he cannot be in the top ten because he was sentenced for murder.
