Why this story matters:

The flyer consists of 6 points setting out those opinions that, according to the party, denigrate women. The most alarming ones are the following:

Those who “offend women’s dignity” are those who

1.     Support the abhorrent practice of surrogacy

2.     Support a culture that encourages the self-determination of the woman, which creates a hostile and resentful attitude towards men

3.     Oppose the natural role of women which is related to the support of life and family

Despite the criticism that the handout sparked, the local party secretary, Giancarlo Cerrelli, did not back down and blatantly affirmed:

“If you touch upon gay, migrants or women you unleash hell on yourself. But women are primarily mothers and wives. Because of feminism, there is too much resentment towards men”.

Details from the story:

  • The flyer was posted on the Facebook page of the Northern League Youth of the city of Crotone, Calabria, and was distributed during the International Women Day
  • Many Italian ministers, especially women, have defined the content of the flyer as "medieval" and have asked the Northern League representatives to denounce it
  • Matteo Salvini, leader of the party and current Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of the Interior, has declared that he was not aware of the initiative and that he does not agree with some of its content
