Why this story matters:

TV commentator and journalist Sergio Vessicchio was suspended from the Journalists’ Association of Campania after he made offensive remarks about linesman Annalisa Moccia while commenting a football match.

"It’s revolting seeing women working as linesmen in a championship on which firms invest a hundreds of thousands of euros, it’s a joke for the [Football] Association.“ Vessicchio stated.

At the same time he specifically asked the cameraman to zoom in on Moccia.

However, after the incident Vessicchio did not show any understanding of the seriousness of his actions. He reiterated his position with a tweet stating that women refereeing male matches is wrong for several reasons.

Details from the story:

  • The Italian Minister of Public Administration Giulia Bongiorno expressed her shock about the sexist comments made by Vessicchio and deemed his behaviour "unacceptable".
  • After the episode, FIFA's female referees tweeted their support to Annalisa Moccia
