Why this story matters:

Kosovo's civil society representatives denounced the prosecutor's comments and requested his withdrawal from the investigation.

"The prejudice of the prosecutor deprives every victim of sexual harassment the ability to seek justice," Prishtina Insight quoted from the statement by civil society activists.

During the interview with BIRN, the prosecutor said he will continue with the investigation.

"I will interview the woman and her husband, and I will try to use arguments and not emotions," he told BIRN.

Yet, he has already made up his mind -- that a woman is a liar and her husband a "degenerate" man. That only discourages victims from reporting the harassment and gives harassers a green light to continue using their privilege of being protected by authorities.

Details from the story:

  • Rexhep Maqedonci, a Kosovo state prosecutor who is leading an ongoing investigation into an assault that involved sexual harassment allegations, said in a phone interview with BIRN that the woman who accused her university professor of sexual harassment was "disgraceful."
  • The assault occurred after the student failed one of her exams. She attributed the failure to the sexual harassment she said she was a victim of committed by her university professor.
  • The assault is alleged to have been committed by the student’s husband after these statements were made by her, Prishtina Insight reported.
