Why this story matters:

Only 30% of academic research published out of British universities are authored by women according to data taken between 2014 and 2017.

The statistics, which do show a small increase, are “ quite disheartening” according to expert Gemma Derrik, who continued saying, “I would have thought in a short period of time we would see much more of an increase”.

The latest data is just over a 4% increase since figures recorded between 2006-2009. Furthermore, some of the most prestigious universities in the UK hover close to the average. Female authors made up only 30.7% of publications from the University of Oxford and 28.4% from the University of Cambridge.

These figures reflect a greater worldwide average. Caroline Wagner, from Ohio State University has highlighted the importance of these figures saying, “The point isn’t necessarily to raise the percentage [of papers authored by women], the point is to examine the systemic obstacles to women’s success”.

Details from the story:

  • Leiden University is behind the new ranking system which identifies gender differences in publishing.
  • The gender ranking is created by scanning 14.6 million articles from 963 universities worldwide.
  • The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and King’s College London led the way with 46% and 40% of female authors, respectively.
