Why this story matters:

The document, which was issued on June 10 and titled Male and Female He Created Them, states that society is now living during a period of "educational crisis", as debates on gender can “annihilate the concept of nature”. According to the Vatican, whoever does not conform to the man-woman dichotomy, is only trying to be "provocative". Therefore, notions of intersex and transgender identity are rejected, and gender fluidity is declared an indication of the “confused concept of freedom” brought by modern culture.

The text was challenged by groups defending LGBTQ people’s rights as a tool made to oppress and hurt the whole community. Protests reached even the Holy See, as the Catholic group New Ways Ministry declared that the document does not take into consideration the new forms in which science understands gender identity.

Francis DeBernardo, leader of the group, affirmed:

"Gender is also biologically determined by genetics, hormones and brain chemistry -- things not visible at birth. People do not choose their gender, as the Vatican claims, they discover it through their lived experiences."

Details from the story:

  • The document was issued during a questionable time, as June is LGBTQ Pride Month
  • The text was not signed by Pope Francis; however, it does quote the pontiff, as well as the holy scriptures, to justify its reasoning
