Xi Jinping -- on the fast track to greatness

China is already writing history - the Asian giant has surpassed the US and become the world's largest economy. Is Xi Jinping, its president, also set to become one of the nation's greatest leaders?

Xi Jinping

Why this story matters:

Xi Jinping is one of the world's most powerful rulers. With a populace of over 1.3 billion people, China certainly has the manpower to follow its ambitions of becoming a dominant global power. With globalization at its peak, the country has now expanded its influence way beyond its borders and has become a key trade partner that several of the world's largest economies highly depend on.

Inside, however, the picture is not quite so rosy. China -- the world's most populous and Asia's second largest country -- has huge economic differences between places such as Hong Kong and Shanghai --  two cities that have seen rapid growth while under British influence -- and the interior. There, in the less ubranized areas, life is quite different for the average Chinese, and the country's capitalist approach to communism has yet to draw some of this population out of bitter poverty.

Xi Jinping has ruled China with an iron fist for the last five years, but his outward looking strategy, which has allowed the country to keep a significant growth rate in the face of growing internal economic issues, might just place him among the nation's greatest rulers.

They say time will tell, but as Anthony Schindler explains in the article below, this could be less time than we expect. We might even get an idea by next week.

Details from the story:

  • China's 19th party congress is taking place this week
  • The congress will see the election of new leadership for the Communist Party of China
  • The event is seen as a test of Xi Jinping's authority within the party
  • There is reason to believe that Xi Jinping will take an unprecidented third term in office in 2022
  • If Xi's “guiding theory” is added to the constitution his status as legendary leader in China will be on par with Mao Zedong
