No holidays for French charity food organization

August generally means holiday and rest for the French. But for charities handing out food to those who need it, the month is exceptionally busy.

Why this story matters:

According to France 3, in the city of Brest (western France), a chain of food charities called Restos du coeur center is overwhelmed by the number of people in need. "We never saw anything like this", said Marie-Noël Grall, the chief of the Best's structure.

The holiday season usually sees an important drop in the number of people needing the services of charity kitchens, but this year their number seems to have grown instead -- for reasons that volunteers cannot fathom.

Since many volunteers are on holiday, those who stayed behind often have to work additional hours to help those in need. Fortunately, some students decided to forego paid summer jobs in order to lend a helping hand to their community.

Details from the story:

  • French food charities are experiencing a surge in customers whereas the summer months are usually less busy.
  • During the summer, more than 1500 centers "Les Restos du coeur" operate in France, which represent 75% of the organization's capacity.
  • Les Restos du coeur were created in 1985 by the famous French comedian and activist Coluche.
