During an interview in a famous French show, a man said abortion was a homicide and it became a scandal. Why ? Because this man is the president of the national union of gynecologists.

Why this story matters:

It could have been just another man or religious person speaking against abortion. But no. He is a doctor. Moreover, he is the president of the French national union of gynecologists. Considering his official position Bertrand de Rochambeau just can't talk only for himself.

When he was interviewed by the famous French tv show "Quotidien" ("daily" in english), aired on TMC, he said : "We are not here to end lives". At this moment the journalist replied that an abortion isn't a homicide. His answer : "Yes it is, madam".

Simple and clear. As the journalist replied again that according to the law, it is not a homicide, Bertrand de Rochambeau said that as a doctor, he can have his own ideas. Indeed he can and he is protected by the law. But as a representative, his words are extremely controversial, even more so when we think about all the women fighting to keep or even get the right to have an abortion when they need to.

This is not the first time in France that this right has been criticized, but usually it comes from those with a religious and/or far-right background.

Not a really promising sign for the future.

Details from the story:

  • On September 11, a doctor said on French television that he considered abortion as  a homicide.
  • This is quite problematic because this doctor, Bertrand de Rochambeau, is also the president of the French national union of gynecologists.
  • In France, this the right to abortion is often criticized by religious groups and the far-right.
  • According to the French law no one can force a doctor or a nurse to do an abortion. But if they refuse, they must right away offer the names of colleagues doing this proceedure.
  • Abortion was decriminalized in France in 1975 thanks to Simone Veil, one of the most well-known women and politicians in this country.
