Why this story matters:

The leader of Germany’s Christian Democrats, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has come under fire after an attempted joke fell flat.

Kramp-Karrenbauer, who was recently appointed to the head of the party, appeared on a Carnival-themed show and mocked gender-neutral toilets suggesting they were "for the men who can't decide if they want to sit or stand when they pee."

The homophobic joke was attempting to be a play on the “hipster reputation” of the country's capital Berlin, proposing the “latte macchiato party” had “installed third-gender bathrooms” in cafés across the capital.

This is not the first controversial incident Kramp-Karrenbauer has been caught up in. In 2015, she compared gay marriage to incest and polygamy, earning her the title of "Miss Homophobia 2018".

Details from the story:

  • Kramp-Karrenbauer appeared on a Carnival themed show on a public television broadcast.
  • Politicians and activists alike have criticized the incident and Klaus Lederer, Berlin’s deputy mayor, labelled the incident a “travesty”.
  • Kramp-Karrenbauer was crowned “Miss Homophobia 2018” following previous homophobic comments.
