Why this story matters:

DNA tests have revealed that Jan Karbaart, the owner of a fertility clinic in Barendrecht, Netherlands intentionally impregnated as many as 49 women with his own sperm.

It was only after Karbaart’s death that individuals came forward with their concerns, believing he had impregnated them or their mothers and was therefore the biological father.

The individuals have been involved in court cases since 2017, seeking to have their DNA cross-referenced with Karbaart’s. Before this, his DNA had been unavailable for them to access. Items such as his toothbrush and nose hair trimmer were used to attain DNA.

Details from the story:

  • Karbaat passed away in 2017 aged 89.
  • Karbaat denied all the allegations.
  • According to Dutch law, only 25 children can be fathered by a single sperm donor.
  • The clinic owned by Karbaat failed to meet storage standards and paperwork requirements leading to its closure in 2009.
