Why this story matters:

Initial charges of manslaughter, carrying a 14-year sentence, were raised to a charge of murder after the court found the man could have foreseen the consequences of his actions.

The horrific extent of her injuries was found upon her death. Her injuries included; broken ribs; damage to her liver, stomach, spleen and tongue; evidence of strangulation; and drugs were found to be in her system.

Xaja’s mother, who has consistently claimed she was unaware of the abuse her child was suffering, was acquitted.

Details from the story:

  • The man was from Hengelo, Netherlands.
  • An expert bought before the court said he had never seen injuries to that extent on a victim.
  • The man had a record of previous assaults.
