Why this story matters:

When a group of men harassed a same sex couple on a bus, heckling them and insisting they kiss, the women refused. As a result, the men assaulted the two women in a brutal attack.

Four teenagers, aged between 15 and 18, have since been arrested.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the incident as a “disgusting, misogynistic attack”. Transport for London as well as various politicians, across the political spectrum, have also condemned the attack.

Melania Geymonat was with her girlfriend Chris when the attack ensued. In a post on social media, Geymonat has described the attack:“They started behaving like hooligans, demanding that we kiss so they could enjoy watching, calling us ‘lesbians’ and describing sexual positions ….”

Details from the story:

  • The Facebook post was published in Spanish and English as Melania is originally from Uruguay.

  • London police are treating the incident as a hate crime and are requesting witnesses come forward.
  • Personal items such as a phone and bag were also stolen.
